Friends and Enemies

At the online poker table you assume that everyone is an enemy, but there are some cases where you’ll end up implicitly developing allies at a online poker table. I don’t mean in the form of cheating, but say you’re a competent player, and you have a competent player at your right, but the rest of the table is full of donks and fish. If you’re both perceptive you can make the other online poker players make themselves enemies of poker. And the number one enemy in poker is mistakes. Mistakes lose you money. So as it ends up, you and the good player will be making less mistakes, even when going head to head and likewise your pots will entice a few fish with worse odds. So you’re helping each other get dead money in the pot. And this is +EV no matter how you look at it. So you help each other out, though not on purpose by playing well and watching the bad players throw money at you guys. But on the same token this can be a double edged sword. You can also overestimate your EV for a decision and make the mistake yourself and you end up getting in a situation where you have made your own enemy of yourself. So be careful when playing with another competent player as it could make you money and lose you money at the same time. I say just play your game and let the implicit dead money fall where it may.

From no Limit to Microstakes

No limit was the darling of the online poker world for a very long time. This is the game you would see if you turned on a online poker television show even this minute. It is exciting, it is high stakes, and it is every casino online player’s dream. At least it was until our economy took a nasty turn and we all ended up penniless. Now it just seems cruel to what people play at stakes that are more than our personal debt. No limit is on its way out. The new star of the poker world is microstakes, where people can play for pennies and have just as much fun. It’s a bit of a mental leap from no stakes to microstakes, but think of it as a learning experience. We have learning that poker isn’t all about the glitz and the glamour of high profile games. Sometimes it is just about a man and his cards. Microstakes make you realize that no limit poker left behind something that was part of the poker game that we all know and love. Too bad it took losing all of our money to realize that all we really wanted was to play a bargain poker game.

Poker Training Sites

I was fiddling around with some poker training sites and trying to see what I could get for free, and what a paid member would enjoy.

The two sites I looked at were LeggoPoker and PokerXfactor. Of course there are sites that use household-names as their professional casino players, but sometimes those players have very little in common with your bankroll and overall poker situation.

While watching some of the LeggoPoker videos, I was able to watch a lot of $.50/$1 NL Texas Holdem. Andrew Lichtenberger, aka RunThisTable or LuckyChewy, now plays $25/50 NL 6-max cash games. But he has a video where he plays the low stakes for first time multi-tablers to try and emulate. Though he has an unmatched bankroll to most of the low stakes players, he doesn’t too often have to dip in for a deep rebuy. Other online poker players on this site, Aejones or Aaron Jones, have videos at slightly higher limits, still well below his bankroll. In a really nonchalant tone he describes the “donk” facing him in a $3/6 NL heads up match. He rebuys up to starting stack any time he dips below, which in the beginning is quite often. He talks through ranges of hands and makes some impressive hero calls and defines the reasons why he made the call.

LeggoPoker overall is a cash-game training site. There are some Multi-table-tournament videos, but for the most part, this site uses great young players as coaches in the cash-game realm. There are no sit and go videos to speak of.

Beta-Glucan - Benefits and Sources

Filed under: Eating Stuff, Exercise, Fun — admin at 12:20 pm on Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Beta-glucan is a fiber-type polysaccharide that is drawn from the cell wall of oat and barley fiber, some types of medicinal mushrooms, and baker’s yeast.

The two main uses of the complex sugar are to bolster the body’s immune system and to minimize blood cholesterol levels. Myriad experimental research programs conducted on animals have presented that the substance activates white blood cells. Studies indicate that one type of the polysaccharide — namely beta-1,3-glucan — is very effective in activating two types of white blood cells namely macrophages and neutrophils. Activated macrophages and neutrophils are an essential part of the human body’s immune system as they can clean up the cellular debris of oxidative damage, destroy tumor cells, further bolster the immune system by activating its other components, and accelerate the recovery of impaired tissue.

Beta-glucan is the primary element for the cholesterol-lowering benefit provided by oat bran. The substance also has the cholesterol binding effect exhibited by other soluble-fibers and as such, is very beneficial in minimizing cholesterol in the blood. Beta-glucan also regulates blood sugar levels in the body by impeding gastric emptying and consequently slowing down the absorption of dietary sugar.

As stated, the complex sugar can be derived from the cell walls of cereal and yeast fibers, which include wheat, oats, and barley. The polysaccharide is also available as a dietary supplement and can be had in liquid form or in tablets and capsules.
